Team Puffa Rider - Terry Boon

When did you first learn to ride?

I was born in the saddle, my Dad was a huntsman. My first pony was a welsh section B called Crystal, I used to do showing and lead rein classes!

What was your first win?

My first win was with the Lamerton Pony club. My first Eventing win was on Vital Decision, at a 3 day event when I was 19 years old.

What has been your biggest achievement so far?

My biggest achievement has been winning the Young Rider European Championships.

What have been your top results?

I have won 10 three day events and have been placed 15th at Badminton.

Who do you most admire in Eventing?

I used to work for Pippa Funnell, I really enjoyed working with her. I admire how she has proved her critics wrong by making an awesome comeback. Also William Fox Pitt he rides in such a cool way, very smooth and rhythmical.

What makes a top event horse?

They must have a great ability, be brave and trainable, with an enthusiastic attitude. They have to want to do it for you.

Who are your top horses?

Always Owen, he is 8 years old, and quite quirky- he has come along way. Primitive Rock- he was bought as a yearling but is 4 years old now. He is going to be a little star as he is so advanced for his years, with a great attitude.

What are your other interests?

I enjoy point to point and jump racing. I like socialising with friends and watching Corination street!

What are your favourite Puffa products?

I really like the Puffa socks and the Shotley gilets. All my team wear Puffa on the yard to make sure they always look smart!

What are your top tips for other riders?

My Mum advised me to do all my BHS exams, so that I could teach if my Eventing career didnt work out- I think it is always good for people to have something to fall back on. I would also say watch and learn from other riders, dont be reluctant to take onboard others advise.  You can learn lots of tips from different riders and put it all together to suit you.

Do you have any superstitions?

I always put my hunting cap away after dressage, so as not to be presumptuous.

How do you calm down before an event?

I like to relax and listen to music, and I dont eat too much breakfast before I go cross country.

What are your future ambitions?

I am focused on the 2012 Olympics, that would be my ultimate goal.
