Team Puffa Rider - Lucy Weigersma

When did you first learn to ride?

I cant remember ever not riding. My mum and dad had their own business selling horses, so I was born into it.

What was your first win?

It was probably a tack and turn out class! My first big win was winning silver in both the individual and team junior European Championships, on my pony Custard.

What has been your biggest achievement so far?

To win the national title at Gatcombe, it was exciting and very unexpected.

Who do you most admire in Eventing?

I admire different aspects of different riders, you can learn something from everyone, whether it be their approach to owners or professionalism etc.

William Fox Pitt is obscenely talented, and a great role model. Mark Todd is also in a league of his own, such a great horseman. Mary King is another inspirational female rider, she is the only female in her age group out there doing it, she is amazing.

What makes a top event horse?

They come in all shapes and sizes. They need to be talented, but most importantly they need to have the right attitude, they need to be willing to please. Physical attributes are also really important, conformation is high on my list of priorities. They need to have a good brain, jump and movement and they have to have a big heart.

What are your other interests?

I dont have a lot of spare time, but I enjoy reading and have been doing a part time university degree in English Literature for the past 8 years. I am planning to buy a piano, as I enjoy playing as it helps me to relax.

What are your favourite Puffa products?

I love the gilets, especially the Kerseys. They are the right weight to warm you up, without being bulky around the arms.

What are your top tips for other riders?

Treat horses as individuals, try to work out what makes them tick and feel happy. You then need to fulfil those needs as part of the horses daily routine. A happy horse will be a much better performer.

Who are your top horses?

Shaabrak is my number one horse. He is 13 and my biggest hope for next year. Woodfalls pure gold will have his first run at Badminton next year, he has been a very satisfying project. Woodfalls Indigo Jones, is also a lovely young horse, who has just been placed 5th at Blenheim.

What are your future ambitions?

To be part of the British Team, and to represent my country at the Olympics in 2012. I want to win the medals there too.
